What is ISO 42001?

In this article, we’ll give you an overview about one of the first attempts to standardize the implementation of AI, and to establish risk management practices: the ISO/IEC 42001. What is ISO 42001?

Previously, organizations and policymakers have established guidelines for responsible AI use, focusing on ethical, transparent, and trustworthy AI systems. Why should your company implement the ISO/IEC 42001?

Implementing an AIMS according to ISO 42001 will not guarantee compliance with the EU AI Act, but the standard can be tailored to facilitate compliance at scale.

The main difference lies in the organizational focus of the ISO 42001 compared to the use case orientation of the EU AI Act. Implementing the AIMS from ISO 42001 without further modifications would leave you unable to meet many technical and use-case-specific requirements from the EU AI Act. Nevertheless, setting up a management system for your AI efforts is a great way to ensure continuous processes and, if combined with other standards or product-centric controls, can be a great basis to ensure continuous compliance with AI regulation.
